Dental Implant Failure
Dental implants have become a fairly routine solution to replace missing, cracked or severely decayed teeth. In recent years dental implants have become the go-to solution as they do not compromise adjacent teeth in the way that bridges can. However, as the number of dental implant procedures increase, so do the number of failed dental implants. Not all dentists have the necessary level of education, training, experience and equipment to obtain the best result.
Installing a dental implant incorrectly into a patient’s mouth is not something to be taken lightly. It will not only affect the appearance of one’s smile but can also result in serious health issues.
Dental implant failure can result in the patient suffering:
- Severe infection: All dental procedures require extensive sterilization techniques beforehand. Dental implants require an even greater attention to detail when cleaning tools, especially in regards to the dental implant that will remain in the patient’s mouth. Failed sterilization can lead to infection that manifests as swollen or bleeding gums or a chronic jaw ache. Without medical attention, the infection could worsen and render the patient seriously ill.
Complications can result when a dentist installs an implant adjacent to an infection without fully cleaning out the area. The implant, placed into an infection will likely fail within months and cause greater harms like abscesses resulting in other teeth being compromised.
- Nerve damage: Running throughout gum tissue mouth are sensitive nerves that can trigger severe pain if severed, compressed, torn, nicked, or irritated. A dental surgeon must be extremely careful when performing a dental implant so to not damage a nerve in any way. In addition to pain, a damaged nerve in the mouth can numb entire portions of the patient’s face and some nerve damage will result in loss of taste. Significant surgery could be required in some instances to correct nerve damage, but in many cases it is permanent.
